Generic name: Hydrocodone

Composition

Contains opioid(Hydrocodone) and non opioid (acetaminophen)

This medication is prescribed to patients suffering from moderate to severe pain.. Hydrocodone alters how your body feels and responds to pain in the brain.

How Do I Apply Hydrocodone?

Before you begin taking this medication and each time you get a refill, read the Medication Guide and, if available, the Patient Information Leaflet attached. If you have any questions, speak with your health care provider or pharmacist.

Usage

Use medication as directed by your doctor

Take orally,  with or without food.

Taking with food  may help if you have nausea.

If you are taking this medication in liquid form, use the medication measuring device for accurate measurement.

Pain relievers are most effective when taken as soon as the first signs of pain appear. The medication may be less effective if you wait until the pain is unbearable.

The dosage is determined by your medical condition and the rate of your response to treatment. Weight is also used to determine dosage for children.. The medication should not be taken more frequently or for a longer period of time than prescribed. When instructed, discontinue the medication.

If you have chronic pain as a result of example cancer,  your doctor may advise you to take long-acting opioid medications as well. In that case, this medication could only be used for severe pain. Other prescription medications may be prescribed as well.

Withdrawal

If you stop taking this medication suddenly, you may suffer from withdrawal symptoms, especially if you’ve the medication for a long time or in high doses. Your physician may reduce our dose gradually to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Contact your doctor or pharmacist right away if you experience any withdrawal symptoms such as watering eyes,  restlessness, anxiety, difficulty sleeping, suicidal thoughts, runny nose, nausea, diarrhea, sweating, muscle aches, or sudden changes in behavior.

Risk Of Addiction

Despite it’s benefits to a large number of people, this medication can occasionally lead to addiction. If you have a substance use disorder such addiction to drugs or alcohol, your risk may be increased. To minimise the chances of dependence, use this medication exactly as directed.

Adverse effects

Severe effects nof Hydrocodone include: nausea, vomiting, constipation, lightheadedness, dizziness, or drowsiness, sleep apnea, such as agitation, confusion, or hallucinations, stomach or abdominal pain, painful urination, loss of appetite, unusual tiredness, weight loss, fainting, seizure, trouble breathing, severe drowsiness, rash, itching and swelling(of the face/tongue/throat).

Precautions and Warnings

Before having surgery, tell your doctor or dentist about all of the products you use, including prescription drugs, over-the-counter medications, and herbal supplements.

This medication should be used only when clearly necessary during pregnancy as it could be harmful to an unborn child.

Because of the increased risk of serious side effects, such as slow or shallow breathing, Hydrocodone is not recommended for use in children under the age of six.

Do not share the medication with anyone. Use for the prescribed ailment only

Do not start, discontinue, or modify the dosage of any prescribed medication without first communicating with your doctor.

Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you should keep naloxone on hand in case of an opioid overdose. Teach your family or household members how to recognize and treat an opioid overdose.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you:

are allergic to it or any other opioids such as benzhydrocodone, hydromorphone, morphine and codeine

have other allergies

have underlying medical conditions such as brain disorders(like brain tumor, seizures, etc), asthma, sleep apnea, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, kidney disorder, liver disease, mental disorder (especially confusion, depression, suicidal thoughts),

have personal or family history of a substance use disorder.

operate machinery or perform any other task that requires consciousness.

you have diabetes, liver disease, or any other condition that requires you to limit sugar and alcohol in your diet.

Storage

This medication’s storage requirements vary depending on the brand. Check the prescription label for more information.

Store at ambient temperature, away from direct sunlight and moisture.

Medication should be kept where children cannot reach.

Do not flush medications or pour them down the drain unless you’re directed by your doctor.

When this product has expired or is no longer needed, properly dispose of it off.

Interactions with other medications

Certain pain medications such as pentazocine, nalbuphine, butorphanol and naltrexone may interact with this drug.

If this medication is combined with other medications that cause drowsiness or breathing problems, the risk of serious side effects such as slow or shallow breathing or severe dizziness may be increased.

Tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are taking any other medications, including codeine and oxycodone, alcohol, marijuana (cannabis), lorazepam, alprazolam, zolpidem, muscle relaxants (carisoprodol, cyclobenzaprine), or antihistamines.

Medications such as antifungals (ketoconazole), macrolide antibiotics (erythromycin), mifepristone, HIV medications (ritonavir), rifamycins (rifabutin, rifampin), and certain seizure medications (carbamazepine, phenytoin), Etc. can interfere with the removal of hydrocodone from your body, which can affect how well it works.

NOTE:

This medication may cause false test results in certain laboratory tests (including amylase/lipase levels). Make sure that laboratory personnels and your doctors are aware that you are taking hydrocodone.

Overdose

In case of serious symptoms of overdose such as passing out or difficulty breathing, administer naloxone or call for emergency medical response.

What if I Missed Doses?

If you miss a dose, take the medication as soon as you remember. Skip the missed dose if the next one is approaching. Take your next dose at your scheduled time.
